I remember when I was struggling in math and had no idea how to approach anything, so I turned to a certain math teacher in a junior high math class. We got in trouble every day for forgetting our multiplication tables, and he was always having us practice things that we already knew from algebra before class started.I still owe him my grades because he put me in the right direction to do well on my own. And it wasn't long before I also found myself in his class and learning how to do many things.Now, a few years later, I'm a math teacher. I teach a sixth grader who has been going through algebra his whole life. He starts off very slow, but once he begins to master the concept, he will dominate everything we do. Why is he so good at algebra?Well, I have a friend of mine who went to college to study math . She went on to be a professor-at-large in math. I am sure she knows about all of the math in high school. But her friend told her that the problem was just repetition. It's not like she is doing things right, but it's just that she isn't repeating them right.So, if you want to get better at math, don't repeat what you already know, try to take it to the next level. If you aren't sure where to start, ask your friends, teachers, and teachers you have met in high school for tips and assistance. And after you know what works for you, keep asking.Some people go to college for advanced math courses. The general belief is that you can do these at the college level and then continue on with more difficult courses once you graduate. That is not true. You don't want to drop the knowledge you have gained in high school because you are thinking you might need it later.You need to get your algebra in high school to help if you have trouble with the concept.
